After the catastrophic explosion in Beirut, SmartAID mobilized and delivered support.

Beirut explosion: The humanitarian crisis and global response

The Beirut explosion occurred on August 4, 2020, when approximately 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate, improperly stored in a warehouse at the Port of Beirut, detonated. The blast caused massive destruction across the city, particularly in the port area, and resulted in widespread damage to buildings, infrastructure, and homes.

The explosion killed at least 200 people, injured thousands, and left hundreds of thousands of people homeless. It also triggered a humanitarian crisis, exacerbating Lebanon's existing economic and political instability.

SmartAID launched an emergency response, coordinating closely with other responders on the ground and donors globally to provide help to overwhelmed hospitals and health facilities treating those affected by the catastrophe.
