When the grid goes down, your local fire department shouldn't.

Challenge

Volunteer Fire Departments are the first responders for most of the country's rural and small-town communities. When a hurricane, wildfire, flood, or severe storm knocks out the grid, some of these departments lose the power and communications they depend on to coordinate a response, at the exact moment their community needs them most.

SmartAID and the Western Fire Chiefs Association (WFCA) are surveying departments now to map exactly what backup power looks like today, station by station.

Solution

SmartAID's Resilient First Response Initiative equips Volunteer Fire Departments with solar microgrids, battery storage, and communications failover — engineered and installed at no cost to the department by a national-scale energy partner. In partnership with each department, we also support CERT training for local volunteers. The result: a fire station that can run silently through a grid outage, host public charging during a disaster, and stay the coordination point its community already trusts — a Resilient Community Hub.

Impact

Our first two pilot deployments are underway, fully funded by our energy partner. Once complete, the plan is a fast-follow rollout — funded by community grants and private donors — into more high-impact departments across the country.

These will be SmartAID's first clean-energy deployments under this program — real, on-the-ground results will be added here once the pilots are complete. What we can already point to: SmartAID's track record equipping first responders in the field, including outfitting Hunt Volunteer Fire Department in Texas with two-way radio communications equipment during the July 2025 floods.
